From Delft
Johannes Vermeer
Johannes Vermeer (1632–1675) was a Dutch Baroque painter and one of the greatest masters of the Golden Age of Dutch art. He is renowned for his quiet, intimate scenes of everyday life, often depicting women engaged in domestic activities. Vermeer’s paintings are celebrated for their extraordinary handling of light, subtle color relationships, and serene, timeless atmosphere. Working primarily in the city of Delft, Vermeer produced a relatively small body of work, yet his influence has been immense. Iconic paintings such as Girl with a Pearl Earring, The Milkmaid, and View of Delft demonstrate his meticulous technique, refined composition, and possible use of optical devices such as the camera obscura. Although largely overlooked during his lifetime, Vermeer is now revered for his poetic realism and his unparalleled ability to transform ordinary moments into works of profound beauty.
