About Li Xuefeng's painting
Yang Dawei
Xuefeng's painting works have a strong sense of release at their core, like volcanic lava slowly breaking through to the surface, representing a spread of vitality. As emotions gradually cool down, the work solidifies into a hard life form. His most sincere mode of viewing expresses a certain primitive and simple form from an individual, introspective perspective, yet it creates an aesthetic attitude imbued with a sense of mystery. We know that the nature-based traditional Chinese aesthetic views emphasize authenticity. Stepping out of the contextual situation of Xuefeng's paintings, we still cannot escape the heaviness endowed by the creator. Because his paintings touch on other emotions of humanity that we have long ignored.
Xuefeng's artwork style is rough, with themes often focusing on ordinary people and objects, and the robust imagery carries a monumental quality. He is adept at using deep browns and hazy greens to forge the souls of people and things. When reflecting on the historical fragments that have already settled in the river of time, what one sees is the resilient warmth hidden within the chaos and uncertainty of history, the traces of life striving to break free from constraints yet returning to the quiet meander of life, continually gathering and intertwining to create a rich and complex historical texture. In fact, he shapes characters while reflecting on the roots of culture and humanity from a broader ecological perspective. If the sincerity that strikes the senses is the soul of Xuefeng's work, then his powerful and full artistic consciousness is the wings of that soul. It is his highly immersive, intricate, and dense creative power that allows his thoughts to penetrate through the surface of history, society, life, and human nature to reach the very essence of humanity. His works return to a strong sense of presence of the human dust and vitality, transporting viewers into a special context, where people, individuals, and magnificent horses rise from the sea of dust before us... He quietly carves with his brush and knife, those vividly colored primal forms are infused with energy and release quietly. This is entirely attributed to Xuefeng's mastery of artistic language; his imagery is sometimes simple and sometimes cold, with artistic forms full of elasticity and tension, allowing the imagery to display a balance of loosening and tightening, as well as the specific shades, textures, and weights generated in different environments.
It is worth noting that the works of Xuefeng nearly shimmer with an uplifting primal energy and strength, which should be a refinement of the creator's life experiences and an insight into historical representations, implying various social meanings. In his writings, characters often appear as strong as iron castings, while natural forms feel as heavy and solid as iron and stone, eventually crystallizing into a simple form. His recurring themes, such as character scenes and human faces, landscapes, etc., emit a serene and sublime warmth. He combines powerful brushstrokes and scratches with painting and sculpture, exploring the possibilities of reshaping art. While his early themes leaned towards the consciousness of 'symbols,' Xuefeng's recent works emphasize a field of power seeking spiritual cohesion represented by traditional culture. Overall, he has departed from generalized moral narratives and representations, focusing more on whether the spiritual dimension provides a new cultural semantic space, aiming to construct an independent spiritual landscape for contemporary people, thereby reflecting whether the expression of artistic language returns to its own purity. We know that an artist must grasp the connotations of relevant cultural resources to form a personal artistic language. Only in this way can a greater interpretive space be presented in the process of transformation and reconstruction. Through repeated experiments with materials, Xuefeng deepens the significance of images, disrupting the viewer's habitual visual experience and generating new viewing experiences. In his view, everything in the painting is not just unity and sincerity, but also eternity in the midst of transience. The people and objects he depicts are magnificent and expressive without being crude, simple yet profoundly distant.
Mystery has been endowed with too many symbolic metaphors in traditional Chinese culture. It can be seen that Xuefeng intentionally conveys metaphorical emotions through color, lines, and composition in his creations. The colors, characters, and other images in his works have a clear subjectivity. He combines his true inner feelings to transform abstract emotions into a visible artistic form. Therefore, Xuefeng relies on imagination to clarify the vague, magnifying the images in his mind, achieving a rational clarity that undoubtedly constitutes an intuitive expression of perceptual understanding, transforming the invisible reality into a visible subjective space.
As a painter who grew up on the grasslands, he uses his brush and palette knife to depict his unique sense of beauty and texture, with a simplicity and depth that hides the vibrancy of life.
