Vigorous, simple and vigorous – I read Gao Wei's recent ink paintings
Text / You Jiang, Curator of Shenzhen Art Museum and Director of Public Education Department
Gao Wei is the director and deputy secretary general of the Office of the Shenzhen Artists Association. From what we have seen so far, she and her colleagues in the Artists Association are dedicated members, busy with work related to the brand exhibitions of the Association. However, I haven’t seen that she has focused on local creation, persistently developing her personal painting style. From depictions of people, objects, and landscapes to urban ink paintings, she has been borrowing and absorbing the excellent creative achievements of her peers.Through deep study of tradition, integrity, and innovation, she has produced many outstanding works in recent years, especially in terms of theme creation and exploration of Jiaomo language, which have caught the attention of the industry.
Looking back at her artistic journey, Gao Wei has moved from arts and crafts design to the creation of traditional Chinese painting.
In her early years, she trained in line drawing and other painting techniques in the Department of Arts and Crafts at Xi'an Academy of Fine Arts.
This foundation laid the groundwork for her future creative work and directly influenced her artistic interests and style.
It’s worth mentioning that from 2005 to 2010, she studied in the United States, where, alongside appreciating the masterpieces of Western art masters, she explored Western painting techniques.
During this time, she felt the transmutation and expression of artistic concepts since modernism and began reflecting on the body of cultural and artistic traditions, ultimately establishing herself in figure and landscape painting.
Since the beginning of the new century, Gao Wei has been at the peak of her creative work.
She has not only immersed herself in the process of creation but has also produced a series of ink paintings with rich themes and varied styles.
She has participated in several national group exhibitions, and some of her works have won exhibition awards and have been specially collected by industrial institutions.
Works such as "Small Scenery by the Lake," "Small Scenery of Mountain Village," "Mountain Residence Map," "Hua Xia Chenhui," "Gou Ba Conference Site," and "Wujiang Datangdu" show that, in recent years, she has gradually shifted from the creation of figure paintings that focus on the beauty of line and ink forms to exploring traditional landscapes.
Although her direction has shifted, her use of line, ink, and artistic conception in creation still highlights her personal style and characteristics.

Specifically, in terms of urban ink painting, Gao Wei has participated in many sessions of the "DeepZhen Painters Painting Shenzhen" and "Shenzhen-Hong Kong Urban Ink" series of exhibitions.
Many of her works, like those of a practitioner of urban ink painting, focus on the expression of urban experience.
From the ontological perspective, she continues to explore the possibilities of ink painting in visual expression.
For example, in "Huaqiang Night", a piece that depicts the city's night scene, she avoids using color. Instead, she utilizes the richness of ink's own language and the unique material characteristics of vellum paper.
This allows the ink to fully express its qualities, with the well-known electronics hub in Shenzhen artistically rendered through the night-time atmosphere of the business district, all conveyed with dripping ink.
Another example is "Street View", where she abandons the traditional spatial perspective method in painting.
Instead, she adopts a technique of simplicity and contrast, conveying the real visual experience of contemporary urban dwellers.
The image’s composition—brushed with intertwined ink—both objectively depicts the cityscape, with high-rise buildings in the distance, and reveals the psychological feelings of individuals in the concrete jungle of the modern urban forest.
In the creation of themes, through the accumulation of perennial style collection, in the specific creation, the integration of Chinese and Western expression techniques, the vigorous brush and ink and the meticulous depiction of monumental objects combined, such a series of works not only show a positive atmosphere, tell the memory of the nation, but also reflect the humanistic feelings of a contemporary painter. Such as "Breakthrough Wujiang", "Wujiang Datangdu", "Gou Ba Conference Site" and other works. In the creation of landscape painting, she combines sketching and creation, pays attention to the fun of brush and ink, uses the pen to be free and easy without losing the rules, complicated but not chaotic, thick but not greasy, in addition to focusing on individual feelings and feelings to express, using the language of painting to transform the scene in front of her into the scene in her heart through ink and wash. For example, in the "Red Shek Estate" series, she expresses her individual thoughts on time and life through the changes of the four seasons of the same landscape.

The creation of Chinese painting is not only the artist's inheritance and expansion of tradition, but also the comprehensive embodiment of the painter's personal emotions, thoughts, realm and character. Painting is like a person, and a painter's control and performance in the language of brush and ink often show his personal temperament. We can see from Gao Wei's works that her works are atmospheric and magnificent, and her brushwork does not drag mud and water, and the composition of the brush and form is simplified. In particular, a batch of charred ink landscapes created by her in recent years use only a single thick ink to achieve rich layered changes such as the shade of the picture, dryness, fiction and reality, which are unique and distinctive. In my opinion, her creative direction is directly related to the foundation of line drawing in her early years, the creation of decorative painting, and the later training of Western painting modeling. From "There Are Homes in the Depths of White Clouds" and "Impressions of Western Sichuan" to "Streams and Mountains", her scorched ink landscapes and brushwork are all integrated, and the vast, atmospheric, thick and simple atmosphere jumps on the paper, creating a sense of vastness, clarity and purity.

In general, Gao Wei has been exploring and experimenting with her creation.
Not only has she studied tradition, brushing, and ink to keep up with the times, but she also faces life directly in her works.
Her style is characterized by rough lines, bold brushwork, vigorous momentum, simplicity, and vigor, showcasing her unique artistic characteristics and position among contemporary ink painters in Shenzhen.
In his "Philosophy of Art", Danner argues that the nature and appearance of material civilization and spiritual civilization depend on three major factors: race, environment, and era.
The production of works, in turn, depends on the spirit of the times and the surrounding trends.
Looking at Gao Wei’s case as an artist, we can see that her earlier works were influenced by the regional painting school of Shaanxi.
After she moved to Shenzhen, however, her perspective—shaped by the feelings of a new immigrant—has driven her to explore urban ink painting over the years.
A series of her ink works reflect the spirit of the new era.
Since the start of the new century, Gao Wei has reflected on and compared Chinese and Western cultures.
She has used this insight to return to her own traditions, responding to the inspiration of the times with her works and recording the changes of the era with a brush.
Regardless of how her language transforms, we can still sense her creative attitude of seeking innovation and change, continually expanding the creative directions of both the past and present.
Thus, today, we see these works as a reflection and summary of her artistic journey at this stage.
In the future, we may witness her expressing life in more diverse ways, reflecting the times, and producing exceptional works that continue to rebel against and transcend her own limits through artistic language.
